Discovering Comfort and Quality: A Boll & Branch Bedding Guide

  • Share this:

Now that I have entered my thirties, my definition of an enjoyable pastime involves returning home at a reasonable hour, settling comfortably into my bed, and engaging in a leisurely reading session until sleep overtakes me. However, despite having experienced a few luxuriously comfortable hotel beds in the past, I have yet to acquire a plush bed of my own.

One aspect that has particularly eluded me is finding the appropriate bed sheets. I am perplexed by how hotel sheets consistently possess a cool and crisp quality. Furthermore, they remain impeccably ironed and smooth, devoid of any wrinkles. Additionally, the pillowcases exhibit a remarkably soft and smooth texture. Consequently, I have embarked on a personal quest to uncover the secrets behind these phenomena.

Motivated by the overwhelmingly positive reviews I encountered online and through personal recommendations, as well as the company's commitment to sustainability, I decided to test Boll & Branch's sheets. Boll & Branch exclusively employs 100 percent GOTS-certified organic cotton, which is sourced ethically from farmers in India. Remarkably, the company has earned the distinction of being the first manufacturer of linens to obtain Fair Trade Certification.

The farmers receive fair premiums for their produce, and the production process utilizes 90 percent less water compared to conventional cotton cultivation methods. Furthermore, instead of opting for air transportation, the Boll & Branch team chooses to ship their sheets via maritime routes, resulting in a reduction of over 20,000 metric tons of emissions to date.

To commence, I was primarily intrigued by the price range of Boll & Branch. The sheets we have previously acquired from prominent retail stores such as Target were priced at approximately $50, although they typically required replacement within a year or two. In March, I managed to obtain organic percale sheets for our guest bedroom from another sustainable brand at a cost of $100.

The sateen weave sheets, which are advertised as the brand's "best-selling" product, commence at a price of $188. The queen-sized set, comprising of one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two standard pillowcases, is priced at a steep $258. Given that this exceeds our previous expenditure on sheets by 2-4 times, I would prefer the price point to be closer to $150-$175, in order to strike a better balance between ethical production and affordability.

Upon placing the order, I eagerly awaited the arrival of the sheets. Boll & Branch claims that these sheets are adored by millions of Americans, thus my expectations were high. Throughout the shipping process, I received informative emails from both the brand and UPS, providing updates on the sheets' journey to my doorstep.

Four days later, the sheets arrived in a well-branded cardboard box. The sheets themselves were enclosed within a cloth case, secured with a ribbon, and accompanied by tissue paper. Boll & Branch proudly asserts that 100 percent of their packaging is recycled and FSC certified.

Overall, I was content with the packaging, although I could have done without the extravagant paper and ribbon. Considering that the sheets' 10,000 reviews potentially correspond to 10,000 individual packages, this results in a significant amount of waste from a single product alone.

Upon opening the sheet set, I was genuinely taken aback by the color I had chosen, Dune. Instead of being a pastel-like taupe, which I had hoped would complement our new bed frame, the Dune color possessed a darker undertone resembling mustard, which was not in line with my expectations.

Regrettably, there was a significant disparity between the colors depicted in the stock photos (on the left side below) and the actual hues observed in person. The photograph captured by an iPhone (on the right side below) was taken at 11 a.m. in a well-lit room, ensuring minimal alteration of the sheets from the previous night to provide the most authentic representation of reality. To avoid experiencing similar disappointment, it is advisable to examine customer-sourced images on platforms such as Pinterest or Instagram prior to making a final decision on the color.

Boll & Branch provides a 30-day risk-free trial, allowing for the exchange of sheets if the tone is unsatisfactory. However, it is disappointing that direct exchanges are not possible, and instead, the process of returning and repurchasing is required, even for a simple color change.

Regarding the quality of sleep, my husband, a man of few words, stated that the sheets were comfortable, and I concur. Boll & Branch claims that their sheets offer a balance between coolness and coziness, and this was indeed accurate. As someone who frequently tosses and turns, the sheets remained lightweight and maintained an optimal temperature throughout the night. While they possess a buttery texture, I have encountered similar softness in sheets purchased from Target, thus rendering them comparable.

Although neither of us deemed them the most comfortable sheets we have ever slept on (as we continue our quest for the perfect hotel-quality sheets), they are certainly suitable for everyday use.

Are the sheets worth the price? That is a subjective matter. I understand that $250 may not be a negligible amount for many individuals, including myself; it is more akin to a significant expense.

My suggestion is as follows: Your decision to purchase should be based on your personal values and financial situation. Considering the amount of time we spend in our beds throughout our lives, I believe it is worthwhile to invest in high-quality bedding that aligns with our preferences. While we may opt to return to our linen sheets for a cooler sleep, these sheets offer an excellent opportunity to harmonize our home with our values, provided that the price is within our means.

Furthermore, if you are seeking a softer neutral color, I recommend choosing either the Natural or White options, as they are two of the lighter shades among the total of nine colors available.

If you have any inquiries, please feel free to leave them in the comments section, and I will do my best to address them as I continue my pursuit of the luxuriously comfortable bed of my dreams.

Key Takeaways:

  1. I greatly appreciate Boll & Branch's unwavering dedication to sustainability, ethics, and quality, as evidenced by their exclusive use of 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton that has been ethically sourced.
  2. Regrettably, the queen-sized set, comprising solely of a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases, is priced at a level ($258) that exceeds my budgetary constraints.
  3. It is advisable to peruse customer reviews and photographs prior to placing an order, as the color options may appear dissimilar online versus in-person.
  4. The sheets provide a comfortable balance between warmth and coolness, with a silky texture that is neither slippery nor excessively crisp. While not quite on par with hotel-grade linens, they are well-suited for everyday use.
