About Monsoon
Monsoon began with a trip made by its founder, Peter Simon, through Spain and then the Asia including Afghanistan and India, before returning to London, with the hope to set up a business selling clothing made in small communities in the countries he had visited. This was no only to bring the vibrant, colourful and hand-crafted styles to London, but also to give the people manufacturing this clothing a sustainable trade, rather than aid, to make them independent, as well as preserving the traditional skills used to create their work.
Upon his return in 1970, he set up a London-based stall selling the hand-printed, hand-woven and crochet designs he has seen. After just 3 years he was able to set up the brand's first store. After the accessory section of the stores kept selling out, the brand also developed the Accesorize clothing store, which first opened 1984. In 1995, Monsoon rolled out its childrens range, followed by the Monsoon home ware range in 1999.
As mentioned above, the trade cherishes its fair-trade roots, and to this end it founded the Monsoon Accessories Trust in 1994, which supported genuinely life-changing projects for over 10,000 women and children all across Asia which helped with income-generation, healthcare and education. It has also won the Queen’s award for International Trade.
