Rugs bring beautiful textures and colors to your home, but unless you have professional help cleaning your carpet, the chore will be a hard one. A washable rug that comes in a variety of shapes and styles is a great alternative to keeping your floors clean and stylish.
Washable rugs are growing in popularity, and Boutique Rugs (available at Boutique Rugs) offers plenty of contemporary and vintage designs that can be tossed right in the washing machine. But are they any good?
I spent several weeks living with a washable rug from Boutique Rugs in my apartment—here's what I think about these popular online rugs.
What is Boutique Rugs?
Boutiques Rugs are sold exclusively online, and they make rugs for the inside and outside of your home. Some of the rugs are washable, and others are not. The rugs sold range from small 2-by-3-foot rectangle shapes and 7-by-10-foot models. Round and runner-shaped rugs are also available.
Boutique Rugs offers a large variety of designs including geometric shag rugs and trendy checkerboards rugs.
Most of the washable rugs from Boutique Rugs can be cleaned in a washing machine, depending on the size.
How does Boutique Rugs compare to Ruggable?
If you're interested in washable rugs, you've probably heard of Ruggable, another online-only brand that, like Boutique Rugs, sells machine-washable rugs. However, there are notable differences between the two.
Boutique Rugs sells a variety of rug types that are not limited to just washable styles, whereas Ruggable only sells machine-washable rugs.
Additionally, Ruggable's machine washable line extends beyond just rugs of all sizes—it also includes other floor coverings like doormats and bathmats. Ruggable also sells outdoor rugs made for standard washing machines.
Additionally, Ruggable rugs come in a two-part system, which includes a rug pad and a rug cover. You can choose from a standard rug pad or a cushioned pad. Ruggable also offers thin rug covers, as well as a new line of premium rug covers, which are three times as thick as the traditional style.
Boutique Rugs washable rugs come in one piece that lays flat on the floor and has a rubber backing to help it stay in place and prevent it from sliding around. Boutique Rugs sells a compatible rug pad to go with its machine-washable covers, but it is not a requirement of the washable rug system.
The cleaning process is one of the main differences between Ruggable and Boutique Rugs. While it's true that Boutique Rugs makes machine-washable rugs, it's also true that not all sizes can go in a standard-size washing machine. For example, sizes 8-by-10-foot and lager will need spot cleaning or cleaning in a large, professional washing machine.
The washable line from Boutique Rugs is also not made to go in the dryer, so you'll need space to air dry them. Alternatively, Ruggable rugs of all sizes fit in most standard washing machines and dryers.
What we like
Boutique Rugs offers a variety of styles that feel soft underfoot
I love the look of a grand Persian rug covering the floor, so when I was browsing through Boutique Rugs’ website, that’s the style I was after. The options were endless—nearly overwhelming—but I was able to find what I was looking for.
Due to the small constraints of my apartment, I tested a 3-by-5-foot area rug. I settled on the Mwingi print, which features a vintage medallion style in cream, navy, pink, and orange. It looks exactly like the photo I saw online when ordering. Underfoot, the polyester weaving feels very soft.
Other washable rugs need a rug mat, but Boutique Rugs’ washable models do not. You can purchase a rug mat separately. I tested my rug without a pad and am impressed by how well it stays in place.
The bottom of the rug is made from a soft rubber that lightly grips the floor, keeping the rug from slipping and sliding around on hard floors. I have been using the rug under my office chair for several months. For the most part, I find that the typical rolling from the chair around doesn’t knock it out of place during my workday.
Occasionally, the corner of the rug catches on the wheel of the chair. I’m not sure if a rug mat would prevent that as it can be a standard hazard of having a rug near moving furniture.
The cleaning process is easy
After several weeks of use, the time finally came to put the Boutique Rug in the washing machine. Even with regular vacuuming, I had to shake out the rug to remove some debris. I wasn’t sure how it would wash with other items so I threw it in alone.
Washing it in cold water and on a standard spin cycle did the trick. It fits in the washing machine with plenty of room to spare.
Placing the rug in the washing machine didn’t damage it—there were no loose threads or tears to the weaving. Instead, the rug looked just as clean and fresh as it did the day it arrived on my doorstep.
The rubber backing remains sticky after going through the wash, maintaining its gripping power.
What we don’t like
Not all of the machine washable rugs can go in the dryer
Some of Boutique Rugs can go in the dryer, however, the model I got is hang dry only.
While I certainly was impressed by how quickly my rug dried after the washing machine, it’s still a bummer that it couldn’t go in the dryer. Plus, it would have been a total drag if I’d gotten a larger model, as I don't have the space in my apartment to line-dry a big area rug.
The smaller size of the area rug I ordered made it easy to hang from our standard laundry drying rack. However, a larger size would’ve been harder to accommodate due to the small constraints of my apartment.
If you’re planning on ordering a large area rug from Boutique Rugs, I recommend making sure it can go in the dryer (or that you have the space to air dry it properly).
Boutique Rugs' washable rugs are thin
If you’re getting a rug to add some underfoot cushioning, the washable models from Boutique Rugs may not be your best bet. The rug is very thin, which makes it flexible and able to go in the washing machine but you lose the cushioning of a classic rug.
The solution for this is to purchase a rug pad separately. Boutique Rugs sells a variety of rug pads including the Mohawk model that’s made from thick felt to give you that extra cushioning.
Should you buy from Boutique Rugs?
Maybe, but there are other options to consider
Boutique Rugs offers a stylish, wide variety of washable rugs in a variety of sizes that hold up well in the washer. The rubber back does a good job of holding the rug in place.
If you’re looking for a rug to give you some extra cushioning underfoot, you will need to pay extra for a rug pad. Also, keep in mind that only certain sizes can be placed in the washer and that the washable rugs cannot be placed in the dryer.
Overall, I think Boutique Rugs is a solid option if you're looking for a small, washable rug to keep in your home. There are many different styles to choose from and overall, the rugs are easy to clean. Plus, you'd need to buy a rug pad with most other rugs, including from other washable options like Ruggable, so the extra cost too is to be expected.
However, Ruggable rugs are easier to clean, as they all fit in most standard size washing machines and can dried quickly in a dryer. Ruggable also offers a variety of styles to choose from, including a shag rug. We think Boutique Rugs is a good washable rug option as long as you opt for a small enough size and have the space to air dry it. Otherwise, a more convenient cleaning option from Ruggable might be the way to go.
