In this review, I’m venturing into new territory by sharing my first makeup review. (Eeeek! 😅) I’m a creature of habit when it comes to makeup, as you may have read in this post where I share my everyday makeup routine. Last month, the folks over at Tarte sent across some products for me to play around with and try out. And now that I’ve had over a month to properly test them, I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the products that I tried – the pros, the cons, and the products that will be staying put in my everyday makeup routine.
I’m sure a lot of you can relate to me when I say that it sure does take a lot of effort to look effortless, and it can be a bit of a minefield to find those ride-or-die beauty products. My routine has evolved over the years to adapt to my lifestyle – from wanting to experiment with colour in my 20s to really paring it back in my 30s since kids have been in the picture. I feel like I’ve only just hit the right balance now and can very quickly determine whether a product is going to be right for me.
Tarte Sea Hydroflex Serum Foundation: This formula is unlike any I’ve seen in a foundation. It’s a serum foundation so it’s lightweight and offers light to medium coverage. The formula took some getting used to at first because it’s so liquidy compared to what I’m used to – but now that I’m used to it, application is quick because it’s so easy to work it on the skin to blend in. This is the only light foundation formula in my makeup collection and I’m happy to have this in my collection – it’s a great lightweight summer formula that offers just the right amount of coverage (it covers my pigmentation very nicely). I wear the shade 32S – a medium sand tone.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer: Unlike the liquidy Hydroflex Foundation, the Shape Tape Concealer has the consistency that you’d expect in such a product. I was particularly keen to try this one out given how many people rave about this as their go-to concealer. It’s not hard to see why – it covers my dark circles and acne scars beautifully (always the test for me) and it doesn’t get that weird flakey or crepey. It gets its name from the fact that it’s got some skin-loving ingredients in the formula – like plumping shea butter – and its formula acts like a tape to firm, lift and smooth your skin. I’m pretty impressed with this one. I wear shade 32S – medium sand.
Contour & Cheeks
Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer: I have to admit, this one threw me off because of the packaging. I have the shade “Park Avenue Princess” and the words are emblazoned on the packaging in a garish gold plaque that is just a tad too young for my liking. But don’t judge a book by its cover – it’s a lightweight formula that’s a lovely shade – it’s not too orangey (like a lot of those universal bronzers end up being when they claim to suit all skin tones…) and the matte formula has a slight sheen. While it’s a powder product, the colour payoff is good and it’s easy to apply.
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush: I was sent several blushes from this line to try, but the stand outs shades for me are Glisten and Captivating. I really love this formulation and I can see why Tarte are known for their blushes. Glisten is a shimmery pinky-peach tone that reminds me a lot of Nars Orgasm – but a bit more muted. Unlike my experience with Nars blushes – this powder blush doesn’t get too messy and is easy to apply. It’s a great summer shade and a light flush to the cheeks is enough to take me from looking pale & frail to happy & healthy once again! Captivating is a matte blush shade and a great rosy flush of colour to my cheeks.
Eyes
Tartelette In Bloom Clay Palette: Hot damn, I’m so happy to have this in my life. This is a great eyeshadow palette with just the right balance of matte and shimmery shades. For work, I’d pop Jetsetter over my lids and layer Rebel & Sweetheart on my crease with a touch of Funny Girl on the inner corner. If it’s a special occasion, Rocker and Firecracker will be added to the crease and Flower Child and Charmer on the inner corner. This palette is gooooood.
Tarte Sea Surfer Curl Volumising Mascara: Considering my lashes are straight and short – I’ll take whatever help I can get. No panda eyes with this one either, so it’s a mainstay in my collection now.
Tarteist Double Take Eyeliner: This is a 2-in-1 product with a twisty pencil liner on one end and a felt tip liquid liner on the other. I don’t use liquid eyeliner so I really only tested the pencil side. As far as eyeliners go, it didn’t blow me away, and it did smudge by the afternoon of wearing it. While that might have been avoided if I wore primer, that’s not something I do as part of my everyday makeup routine. My go-to eyeliner for years has been the MAC Technakohl Eyeliner which is a waterproof formula to prevent the panda eye situation.
Tarte Sea H20 Lip Gloss: Just the right amount of colour with a nice creamy colour finish and a non-sticky shine. I usually save lip glosses for events these days, but the neutral shades of Hang Ten and Villa also work for everyday.
